Cooked apples remind me of my grandmother! She always had "fried" apples when I visited her and she made fresh apple pies. This recipe tastes almost as good as her apples (no one can replace my grandmother's fried apples!) with much less effort!
We love to eat these cooked apples alone as applesauce or over plain greek yogurt, waffles, pancakes, ice cream.... YUMMY!
This recipe is simple and you get to control the quality of the ingredients you use!
Ideally you want to start with fresh, organic apples, because apples are #4 on the Environmental Working Group's (EWG) Dirty Dozen list of produce containing toxic pesticides. EWG's analysis of tests by the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that nearly 70 percent of samples of 48 types of conventionally grown produce are contaminated with pesticide residues. More than 98 percent of samples of strawberries, spinach, peaches, nectarines, cherries and apples tested positive for residue of at least one pesticide. SOURCE
The only way to reduce your toxic exposure from apples, because you can not wash off the pesticides, is to buy organic. Luckily, many varieties of apples make this recipe taste wonderful, so you can use what you can buy organically grown!
You can use a few drops of lemon oil in water to soak your chopped apples so they don't turn brown as you finish chopping and preparing your other ingredients. The lemon oil bath adds a slight lemony taste to your apples which is wonderful!
Adding the On Guard oil blend after your apples have cooked provides a wonderful aroma and taste, particularly from the cinnamon and clove oils that are in this blend. You don't want to add it during the cooking phase because the heat will reduce the benefits of the oil.
